IPL/RF Treatment At Mission Family Optometry, we are committed to offering the latest and most advanced treatments to improve ocular health. We are proud to introduce InMode Forma I (RF) technology and Lumecca I (IPL) as part of our suite of innovative solutions for dry eye disease. This cutting-edge approach allows us to provide even more comprehensive care to our patients.
There are two major causes of dry eye disease: Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye and Evaporative Dry Eye.
Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye
Patients with this type of dry eye generally have trouble producing enough tears to keep their ocular surface lubricated. Contrary to conventional thinking, this type of dry eye is much less common and is often associated with autoimmune conditions like Sjögren’s Syndrome, certain medications, or as a result of refractive surgery or other ocular trauma.
Treatment for this type often includes regular use of artificial tears or other topical medications to stimulate tear production.
Evaporative Dry Eye
Evaporative dry eye is by far the most common form of dry eye disease and is caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). MGD occurs when the small oil-producing glands in the upper and lower eyelids become clogged, reducing essential oil production. This oil is crucial for maintaining a healthy tear film by preventing rapid evaporation of tears, allowing for adequate oxygen delivery to the cornea, and improving the quality of vision.
Patients suffering from MGD often report symptoms such as burning, irritation, excessive tearing, light sensitivity, redness, blurry vision, and the sensation of having sand in their eyes.
Treatment will vary depending on the underlying cause of the gland dysfunction, often requiring a combination of in-office therapy and at-home management.
RF, or Radiofrequency, is an advanced technology offered at Mission Family Optometry. Forma I (RF) uses bipolar radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production, tighten the skin around the eyes, and improve gland function. It is particularly effective for treating dry eye symptoms and addressing signs of aging around the eyes.
Forma I RF is performed as the first step in combination with Lumecca I IPL, where the clogged meibomian glands are heated using RF energy to approximately 109°F, leading to effective evacuation of the glands and eventual neocollagenesis.
The Forma I procedure is used prior to IPL and utilizes radiofrequency energy:
Preparation: A conductive gel is applied around the treatment area.
Radiofrequency Application: The Forma I device delivers controlled RF energy to the targeted area, gently heating the tissues and stimulating collagen production.
Sensation: Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a "hot stone massage" on their eyelids.
Duration: The procedure typically lasts about 30 minutes, with a series of treatments recommended for optimal results.
Promotes gland rejuvenation, improving the quality of natural tears.
Reduces fine lines and signs of aging around the eyes.
Non-invasive procedure with no downtime.
Boosts skin elasticity while alleviating dry eye symptoms.
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a cutting-edge treatment primarily used to address skin issues like rosacea and sun damage. However, it has shown remarkable results in treating meibomian gland dysfunction, the leading cause of dry eye disease. Lumecca I is an advanced IPL technology used to target the inflammation causing the chronic clogging of the meibomian glands.
The IPL procedure is simple and minimally invasive. Here’s what to expect:
Preparation: Protective eye shields are used, and a cooling gel is applied to the skin.
Light Pulses: The Lumecca I device delivers controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to the treatment area. These pulses penetrate the skin, targeting the leaky blood vessels that cause inflammation.
Sensation: Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a warm rubber band snapping against the skin.
Duration: Each session lasts about 15–20 minutes, and multiple sessions are often recommended for optimal results.
Individuals suffering from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) or dry eye disease can greatly benefit from intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. IPL treatments help reduce inflammation and improve gland function, offering relief for those dealing with the most common symptoms of dry eye disease.
Patients with ocular rosacea, a condition that often leads to inflammation around the eyelids, may also find IPL beneficial. Ocular rosacea can exacerbate symptoms of dry eye and cause persistent redness and irritation. By targeting the blood vessels and reducing inflammation, IPL can help manage these symptoms and improve overall eye health.
For individuals seeking a quick and convenient solution to chronic eye irritation caused by gland dysfunction, IPL offers an effective option. The treatment is fast, making it appealing for those looking to relieve eye discomfort with minimal disruption to their routine. Please consult with your optometrist to confirm whether you are a good candidate for IPL.
